In 2018 it was bought by the Catalano family, who have owned Byron Bay’s legendary Raes at Wategos seven-room hotel and restaurant since 2016 (local to the Hemsworth brothers and their celebrity friends).
According to family patriarch and former Domain boss Antony Catalano, Sea Raes cost £10 million in 1996. Buying and refurbishing it – with the expertise of Sydney interior designer Tamsin Johnson – cost $6.5 million.
Sumptuous meals served on deck are among the pleasures of life aboard Sea Raes.

Over 2 metres tall (six foot seven in “old money”), Okey was constantly banging his head or stooping while serving with Border Force. On Sea Raes, he can stretch out because the ceilings are so high.
(Having said that, I bang my head getting in and out of my bow-end bath every morning.)
After a 90-minute voyage the previous afternoon, Okey had moored us just off Shaw Island, and couldn’t hide his disappointment. Three catamarans had arrived before us.
Sea Raes is furnished with teak panelling and exquisite marquetry and granite insets on the tables and bars inside and out.
Sea Raes’ entire Whitsundays pitch is that its seaworthiness and flexibility means it can take guests to places few can visit. Still, the catamarans’ passengers weren’t sitting down to a dinner as sumptuous as the one prepared for us by Alex Bentley (sous chef at Raes at Wategos).
