As one of the industry’s oldest and most well established shipyards, the Dutch superyacht builder Amels has a world-renowned reputation for its new-build capabilities. The construction of its Limited Editions and full custom yachts, however, is just one feather in the cap of the Dutch shipyard. The relaunch of Here Comes the Sun earlier this year after an extensive 14-month refit demonstrated just how strong the shipyard’s refit facilities are and SuperYacht Times sat down with Michel Coens, Head of Refit and Services at Amels and Damen Yachting, to find out more. For the last five years, Amels has invested in a major expansion of its refit facilities, both in the main shipyard in Vlissingen, as well as at its various global facilities. “Until the early 2000s, refit was a secondary offering at Damen Yachting,” explained Coens, “and while we always reserved space in our shipyard for returning yachts, it wasn’t until the building boom of the mid-2000s that we truly began to invest in the refit side of the business and that investment has continued.
