The 2022 Monaco Yacht Show will launch the new exhibition area called Sustainability Hub.  This hub is an incubator for companies that provide innovative or tried-and-true eco-friendly solutions, as well as for budding start-ups working on sustainable alternatives that fit in seamlessly with the yachting world. The exhibition will be located on 200 sq. m in Darse Sud, the tent dedicated to nautical equipment and technology.

The Monaco Yacht Show announces its collaboration with the Water Revolution Foundation in order to select companies that are eligible for the Sustainability Hub.

The Sustainability Hub was created as part of the Monaco Yacht Show’s eco-friendly approach, which was initiated in 2005. The show thereby serves as a tool to raise awareness on environmental issues within the Monegasque and international yachting community.

People who saw the world premiere at the Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice say it’s not to be missed. But then, Pierfrancesco Favino, David Beckham and Charles Leclerc alone would be enough for it to classify as an extraordinary project.

The great news is that the short film can now be seen on YouTube and the social channels of Riva and Ferretti Group.

Inspired by the cult TV series “The Persuaders!” (in Italy “Attenti a quei due”), the film was made over the past few weeks on the coastline around the border between Italy and the Côte d’Azur.

The hugely famous protagonists are Pierfrancesco Favino, the most important Italian actor, who was also in the Riva brand’s first short film (“Riva in the Movie”), the international football star David Beckham, an icon of British style and one of the most followed celebrities in the world and Charles Leclerc, an outstanding Scuderia Ferrari team racing driver idolised by Formula 1 fans.

Royal Ulster’s Classic offshore overnight Ailsa Craig race will start from the club line at Bangor in Belfast Lough on Friday evening (17th) with the first warning signal at 19.00 hrs. On a good day, the Craig can be seen from the Club.

With a forecast of light winds, the course will probably be round the rock at the mouth of the Clyde and back to the club, about 80 miles.

At the moment there are four competitors, all of whom may be using it as a warm-up for the Bangor Town Regatta a week later, but given the unstable weather at present, some prospective entrants may be waiting until the last minute to make a decision.

On the other hand, they may be saving their energies for those four days of racing.

Sailing with a dog to Ireland has become more problematic for sailors, according to the Irish Cruising Club (ICC).

Since Brexit, sailors cruising from Great Britain to Ireland with a pet must fill in a form and send it to the Livetrade desk of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, giving a day’s notice of arrival.

They are then advised to land their yacht at a designated Travellers’ Port Of Entry (TPOE).

These – if you arrive by sea – are the ports of Dublin, Rosslare Europort and Ringaskiddy Port in Cork – all of which are commercial ports and prohibited to yachts.

‘In other words the Livetrade desk is asking people to follow a procedure with which they simply cannot comply,’ explained Norman Kean from the ICC, who is author of the club’s cruising guides to Ireland.

He said cruisers, who for years have brought their pets to Ireland on their boats, are now effectively banned from doing it again, and are ‘understandably upset.’

A Timaru man who was chairman of both the South Canterbury and Southern district health boards is being remembered as someone who was knowledgeable and led by example.

Joseph (Joe) Gordon Butterfield, a born and bred Timaruvian, a chartered accountant who loved yachting, passed away at Strathallan Life Care in Timaru on June 11, aged 82. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Arnott and two children.

Butterfield’s daughter, Megan van Dyk, said he was someone who led by example and loved people and being around people.

“He taught us to treasure and nurture the relationships with people,” van Dyk said.

“He had a very bold and big personality, and he was gregarious and outgoing. He loved life and always tried to enjoy what he was doing and who he was doing it with.”

Van Dyk said her father loved being outside whether it was skiing on the mountain or sailing in the water and some of her best memories with her father have been during those times.

She added that his love for sailing had passed on to her brother, Robert Butterfield, who, along with his children, has continued to sail.

Current SCDHB chairperson Ron Luxton said Butterfield was the first chairperson he served under when he joined the board 21 years ago.

“He was a confident chairperson,” Luxton said of Butterfield’s nine-year stint as chairman that ended when he stepped down in 2009. In 2010 Butterfield began a four-year appointment as the Southern DHB chairman.

A person walking down Front Street this week may be surprised to hear that Bermuda’s tourism sector is in turmoil.

Entries from the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race line the docks, visitors throng the streets, and the shops and restaurants are busy.

Next week, Bermuda welcomes nearly 200 yachts from the Newport Bermuda Race. Just a few weeks ago, the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix beamed images of Bermuda around the world.

And yet, with the departure of Charles Jeffers II after little more than a year in post, the Bermuda Tourism Authority (BTA) has now seen three chief executives leave in just 28 months.

It is tempting to carry on the nautical theme further; to suggest that the BTA now looks like a rudderless boat being driven towards the rocks while instant experts debate what to do. In the meantime, the sails are flapping and the crew is climbing into the lifeboats.

A nautical theme is indeed apt because promoting Bermuda as a base for yachting and sailing has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal period for Bermuda tourism. And yet the Progressive Labour Party campaigned against Bermuda as the site of the 2017 America’s Cup and has been ambivalent about sailing events ever since.

In many ways, this sums up the problem with politicians getting involved in tourism, and helps to explain why the BTA was set up as an autonomous marketing authority in the first place.
