Act 1 of the 2023 Pallas Capital TP52 Gold Cup series will be hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia this weekend when David Doherty and his Matador team will be back to defend the overall title they won last year.

Matador has retained the form that earned her victory at the inaugural 2022 TP52 series. Hot to trot, Doherty’s boat also won the 2022 CYCA Trophy and placed second overall to the new TP52, Caro, at the 2022 Australian Yachting Championships at Hamilton Island.

However, others have further honed their skills more recently with the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, the 2023 Australian Yachting Championships and other regattas, events Matador did not attend.

Among the starters in Act 1 are old foes and new challengers – the former includes Craig Neil’s Quest and Chris Townsend and Matt Donald’s Gweilo.

Quest won the 2021 Gold Cup and finished runner-up 2022. She has twice won the Sydney Hobart and has also finished runner-up and third.

Gweilo won the 2022 IRC component of the Series from Matador, was second in the CYCA Trophy and placed second overall in the 2022 Sydney Hobart.

Experienced cruising and racing sailor joins the RYA Board

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has today announced the appointment of Professor Sir Michael Arthur, an experienced racing and cruising sailor and accomplished British academic, as the new Chair of its Board.

Sir Michael, a member of the Royal Southampton Yacht Club, will take over the position of Chair of the Board from Chris Preston after the RYA Annual General Meeting (AGM) in November 2023, following a handover period that will start this summer.

Sir Michael has been a member of the RYA for more than 30 years and has been sailing, in one form or another since his teens, having learned to sail at a gravel pit north of London. This has included Laser and Fireball dinghy racing at club level, windsurfing for leisure, and in more recent years keelboat sailing with some racing in the Solent and cruising throughout Europe.

Sir Michael was the tenth Provost and President of University College London (UCL) between 2013 and 2021 and prior to that, he was the Chair of the Russell Group of UK universities and the vice-chancellor of the University of Leeds between 2004 and 2013. His previous…

ROLEX CHINA SEA RACE: ASIA'S CLASSIC OFFSHORE RACE

ROLEX CHINA SEA RACE: ASIA’S CLASSIC OFFSHORE RACE

, 2023-03-21 00:59:00,

HONG KONG, March 21, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The Rolex China Sea Race will start on 5 April 2023 in Hong Kong’s iconic Victoria Harbour and take competitors 565-nautical miles (1,046 kilometres) across the South China Sea to Subic Bay in the Philippines.

Rolex has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with yachting dating back to the late 1950s.  Close support of pre-eminent yacht clubs and first-class events has been the cornerstone of this partnership.

The Rolex China Sea Race and its organisers the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC); one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in Hong Kong, have been supported by Rolex since 2008, when Rolex became the title sponsor of this biennial race. The 565nm Category 1 Offshore Race is run under the auspices of Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC).

First held in 1962, this year marks the 61st anniversary of this offshore classic, the oldest blue water race in Asia; and after five years of absence, the Rolex China Sea Race celebrates its 30th edition.  Many of the world’s best-known sailors and yachts have tried to master the race and the 565-nm offshore course is considered a real test of sailing skill.

While the majority of the fleet are Asian-based, sailors from around the world have been drawn to participate by the race’s elevated standing as well as the stringent examination of skill and endeavor it presents, its underlying Corinthian spirit and traditions.

Lucy Sutro, the RHKYC Commodore, recognizes the characteristics that make the…

See her at South Coast Boat Show 21-23 April, 2023 Ocean Village, Southampton

Collective Spirit, the sailing yacht that was built using over 1200 donations of wooden items to celebrate the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, has been acquired by Universal Yachting. Her first public appearance after many years will be at the South Coast Boat Show, 21-23 April in Southampton, relaunching her legacy as a boat designed to involve the community in her construction and experiencing her on the water.

The concept for the boat was originally created by the Lone Twin Boat Project. It was funded by the Arts Council, designed by Simon Rodgers and built in Emsworth by a team led by local Olympic yachtsman and silver medallist, Mark Covell. The result is a stunning 30′ sailing yacht, constructed with items of wooden memorabilia donated by people across the south coast of England, containing treasured children’s toys, wooden sports kit, a piece of a Jimi Hendrix guitar, with sections of vessels from family sailing boats to the Mary Rose and the Royal Yacht Britannia. Each item was catalogued, capturing the fascinating stories and memories behind every donation.

Collective Spirit was launched on 7…
