No. It’s beyond tragic that a floating palace could share a name with a now-defunct Southwest Airlines in-flight magazine. I’m here to help. Island Packet 380: The best liveaboard cruiser out there?

With their ivory colour and tall, rounded coachroof, the Island Packets are nothing if not distinctive.

Designed and built in Florida, they’re sought after across the pond for blue-water cruising but a few of them have migrated to colder climes.

I joined Jalan Jalan, an Island Packet 380, to find out how they perform in our northern waters.

The first Island Packet was built in 1979. Designed by Bob Johnson, it was a 26-footer with a cutter rig, long keel and 10ft beam!

The yard soon made a name for itself producing well-built, spacious cruising yachts. From the outset, safety and stability were front and foremost in the design.

The Island Packet 380 came along some 20 years later and was a highly successful model – 169 were built between 1998 and 2004.

My first impression of the boat was just how much boat there is – she dwarfed the Sigma 38 next-door.

The bow platform and davits mean she’s about a metre longer than her 38ft title suggests, and with a 4m beam she considerably out-girths her rivals too.

The result is a boat with a huge interior volume. Unlike other boats of these proportions though, she has the underwater profile to match.

The ‘full foil’ keel, which Johnson espoused, means there’s a lot more going on below the surface than meets the eye.

RORC Morgan Cup Race 2022 – Preview

The Royal Ocean Racing Club Season’s Points Championship continues with the 8th race of the series, the Morgan Cup Race. Starting from the Royal Yacht Squadron Line at 1800 BST on the 17th of June.

The intention is to start the RORC fleet to the east and around the southside of the Isle of Wight. The final destination will be Dartmouth where a warm welcome awaits from the Royal Dart Yacht Club. 44 teams have entered the Morgan Cup Race competing for the overall win under the IRC Rating Rule and for IRC Class Honours.

Favourite for Line Honours will be Antoine Magre’s Class40 Palanad 3, one of the world’s fastest Class40s. Palanad 3 won her class in the 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race and the 2021 RORC Transatlantic Race overall. Magre will also be taking on the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race this August.

For the Morgan Cup Race Palanad 3 is also entered under IRC, it will be very interesting to see how the team fair against the fleet after time correction. Joining Antoine Magre for the Morgan Cup will be the highly accomplished young British navigator Will Harris and Dutch protégé Rosie Kuiper, both are destined to compete in The Ocean Race 2022-23.

The largest and highest rated boat in IRC One for the Morgan Cup Race is Jonathan Butler’s Swan 62 Coco de Mer. Returning to the UK offshore arena is Tom Kneen’s JPK 1180 Sunrise, overall winner of the 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race and class winner for the 2022 RORC Caribbean 600.

Coincidentally, the founder of the Boston Whaler brand of legendary sportsfishing boats was a man called Fisher. He – full name Richard T. Fisher – had a dream to provide his customers with the safest, highest quality, most durable boats in the world.

In 1958, he set out to realise that dream by creating Boston Whaler hull number one in Braintree, Massachusetts, USA. Fisher claimed two innovations for his boat; firstly, it featured a twin sponson hull design for outstanding stability and a dry ride and, secondly, it had a unique foam core which, Fisher bragged, was unsinkable.

Of course, in a land which grew up with snake oil salesmen, a mere claim was never going to satisfy the good folk of Massachusetts (where the legal ruling judging snake oil to be a scam was made).

Fisher needed to show his cards. To prove the point, he sawed one of his boats in half and duly motored away into the sunset on the half with the engine still attached.

ISA Yachts launched Resilience last September, but now we’re finally getting a look inside the superyacht.

The 213-footer, which is one of the yard’s Classic models, offers the interiors of a high-end hotel. Named after the resilience shown throughout the pandemic, the vessel was penned by Enrico Gobbi of Team for Design and features naval architecture by the Palumbo Superyachts team.

Built at Palumbo’s Ancona shipyard, Resilience sports a steel hull and aluminum superstructure that have been finished in an elegant navy and white colorway. She has a dynamic profile with a razor-sharp bow that allows her to cut through the waves.

It’s what’s on the inside of the vessel that really stands out, though. With a huge interior volume of more than 1,4000 GT, the yacht’s living quarters are furnished with gorgeous designer pieces and offer ample space for entertaining. All six decks are connected by a circular staircase that doubles as an art installation showcasing striking glass jellyfish made by Preciosa.

Starting at the lower deck, there are four large guest cabins and eight crew cabins. There’s also a beach club of nearly 2,000 square feet that comes complete with a swim platform, a lounge, a bar, gym, sauna and a massage room. Highlights of the club include strategically placed LEDs, a bar decorated with Murano glass and a unique plated ceiling that showcases the swimming pool above.

The main deck is dedicated to a full-beam owner’s suite, which includes foldable terraces on both sides, a crystal chandelier custom-made (again) by Preciosa and contemporary furniture…

You might think £30,000 sounds like a lot of money for a ‘starter boat’. But tracking down a comfortable and seaworthy yacht that’s 30 foot long, less than around 40 years old and capable of taking a crew on coastal cruising trips costing less than £30,000 on the second-hand market can be a challenging project.

It’s stating the obvious, but sailors who are happy with smaller yachts have far more to choose from.In the days before the ‘smallest’ new starter boat became a costly 30-plus footer, many builders used to offer popular ranges stretching from 20ft to 32ft.

But if you are looking for the best 30 foot boats within a £30,000 budget, you will have to start delving into the realms of older yachts.

Constructed in steel and aluminum, the yacht’s internal layout features six cabins with a seventh convertible, including a full-beam owner suite located on the forward main deck. Measuring over 1400 GT, Resilience has huge volumes and clever design.

The use of personality tests for recruitment purposes is nothing new, they are used by 89 of the Fortune 100 companies and almost 2.5 million people complete the Myers-Briggs test every year. It’s not just the business world that’s making the most of this psychological tool either, personality tests are very much in vogue amongst the younger generation and have become a strange product of a new age of ‘pop-psychology’. Although they can act as a stepping stone towards increased self-awareness, they aren’t particularly well-received in the professional realm of social sciences. While some claim them to be a ‘fad’ and ‘gimmick’, others are adamant about their utility for recruitment purposes. But do they have a role in the superyacht industry?

Liam Dobbin, Managing Director at Wilsonhalligan recruitment, believes they are a valuable tool for his line of work. Speaking to SuperyachtNews, Dobbin explains, “We use the 16 personalities test for growth and development purposes more so than for direct recruitment. It can increase self-awareness and show candidates that perhaps they are lacking in certain aspects such as communication or organisation… what I will say is it’s important that people understand what they are being tested for and that the person giving the debrief has at the very least a basic understand of psychology.”
