Bridgeport fundraiser to feature America’s Cup 12 meter races

BRIDGEPORT — Few sporting champions from 1962 are still performing at the same level they did in their heyday. But local residents will get a chance to see an exception to that rule this week when America’s Cup-winning yacht Weatherly takes to the water off Bridgeport for a series of match races against 1980 competitor Lionheart.
The races will comprise the Klein Cup Regatta. Laurence Caso, executive director of the Klein Memorial Auditorium, said the stakes are high for this event.
“We see this as our major fundraiser for the year,” Caso said.
The match races between the two 12 meter racing yachts is believed to be the first of its kind in the state since 1985. Proceeds will help fund the Klein’s free afterschool arts education program for students and allow the venue to attract more performances, Caso said.
The two-day event runs Oct. 1 and Oct. 2 at Steelpointe Harbor. There are three races each day, starting at 11 a.m. and ending around 3:30 p.m. More information is available at thekleincup.org.
Caso said he had thought about putting on such an event for years, but it only became possible after he was able to snag the 12 Metre Yacht Development Foundation for the event. The foundation restores and maintains yachts that have participated in previous America’s Cup races, including Lionheart and Weatherly.
