20 years of Nikki Beach St Tropez: white parties, champagne showers and helicopter proposals | Travel

No wonder Naomi Campbell fell in love with this place. Nikki Beach St Tropez is everything you imagine the superstar, super-rich, supermodel south of France to be. Its pool doubles up as the perfect catwalk where guests pose on bright, white, just-plumped daybeds (the most expensive cost £3,000 to rent), dance in front of a mammoth DJ deck, and clink glasses on the terrace under fir trees strung with fairy lights.
You can tell it’s the first restriction-free summer: everyone is in a good mood, whether grabbing chopsticks for the £460 “sushi boat” (Bono has been known to moor his yacht for one) or tucking into a “sexy salad”: a mix of lobster, avocado and so-called superfoods. Whatever those superfoods are, it seems they’re giving guests the same glow. The first to get up to dance on the tables is a woman probably in her late sixties, and hardly anyone is still sitting when a saxophonist starts his live solo.
This summer the most popular beach club on the Continent is celebrating its 20th anniversary. In 2002 the south of France was the obvious place to launch the first European outpost of the American party sensation. Now as then St Tropez, set among green ribbons of vineyards, has more yachts than Ubers. It glitters with wealth wherever you look, from the Swarovski collars on the yapping pomeranians tied up outside Jimmy Choo to the gold hands of the Rolex clocks that tick on each street corner.
